Rock of Ages

It seemed like such a simple idea yet the results were far more spectacular.  At our last dance party, Friday March 6th, our deejay, The Den Mother, created a playlist of dance songs that spanned–in order–music from each decade since the 1950s.  She went the extra mile and only incorporated songs that hadn’t previously been heard at a dance party.  (She used the song database to research which songs had and which songs hadn’t been played before.)  Clever, right?  And the result was a rockin’, hip-hop-tacular dance experience!  I found myself discovering the rhythms of each musical era and interacting with the music in an all-new way.  It took a one-of-a-kind experience like this to remind me once again how 1970s R&B beats are often found in ’90s hip hop, and how 1950s early rock n’ roll is not that dissimilar to ’80s dance hits.

Many thanks to The Den Mother for putting in the time to create this fun playlist.  Have you ever been inspired by someone else’s music mix?  I have.  I’m already on the deejay schedule and I’m going to make my own Rock of Ages playlist.  It’s coming in May–so you don’t want to miss my response to The Den Mother.  Are you on the schedule to be an upcoming deejay?  All we ask is one hour’s worth of dance music–and a screenshot of your playlist posted on the facebook group wall before the event.  Sign-ups are going on now–talk to either of the den mothers to be added to the schedule.  Here’s a link to more information about being a deejay.

We dance again on Friday, March 20th, 8pm at Martell’s in Highland Square.  Remember–we dance every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Friday of each month.  That’s not the same as every other week!  The benefit of scheduling it the way we do it is that you can look at any calendar–as far into the future as you like– and know exactly when we’re dancing.  Questions?  Join us on our Facebook page, our Facebook group, and Twitter.  We’ll see you on the dance floor!
