Out with the Old, In with the New

Last Friday, January 17th, we got a chance to dance to a playlist from DJ Dub-Cee.  This first-time deejay put together a collection of songs that were a way for her to say goodbye to 2013–and inspire a better year in 2014.  I hope we all have a better year than last, as we grasp the full potential and promise of the new year.  Do your new year’s goals include more exercise or more activity?  Then I hope you’ll see DDPP-Akron as a way to reach those goals and you’ll join us on the dance floor.  Thanks to DJ Dub-Cee for providing us with an hour’s worth of music.  Check out her awesome playlist:

Don’t you…forget about…our Fifth Friday dance party this month!

On Friday Jan. 31st, our movie soundtrack night, we will be dancing to a collection of dance hits from 1980s teen movies!  You’ll recognize songs from the movies The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Say Anything, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Valley Girl, Some Kind of Wonderful, and more.  This playlist will break your heart–all over again.  So channel your inner Molly Ringwald and leave your teenaged angst on the dance floor.  That’s Friday Jan. 31st at 8pm at Martell’s Dance Studio in Highland Square.  See you then.

The women of DDPP Akron don’t have a problem staying warm enough during the winter months.  Our dancing raises not only body temps–but we rock it til the dance floor is HOT!  Such was the heat during our last dance party, Friday January 3rd.  DJ Steez came to the rescue with a last minute playlist–one that had us under her influence.  Actually, her playlist followed a theme: Under the Influence.  And her influence is what we needed to keep our feet movin.’  Thanks to DJ Steez for donating her time to provide us with the music we needed.  Check out her hot playlist:

Are you interested in sharing a playlist with the group?  We are currently scheduling deejays for Spring 2014 and we need more volunteers to create a collection of an hour’s worth of dance music.  If you’re interested, please speak with one of the Den Mothers after the next dance party.

Start making your own prom dresses, ladies!  It’s 80s Teen Movie night at DDPP–Friday Jan. 31st.

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to dance more–and why wouldn’t it be to dance more?–our next dance party is Friday, January 17th at 8pm at Martell’s Dance Studio.  Feel free to bring a girl friend and show her why you love dancing with DDPP Akron.  Remember:  we’ve raised our fee to $3–but that’s no big deal, right?  We got to cover the rent, ya know.

DON’T FORGET: January has a fifth Friday so we’ll be dancing to a movie soundtrack.  Word on the street is that this month’s movie soundtrack playlist is actually a collection of songs from ’80s teen movies–hits from Breakfast Club to Valley Girl, Pretty in Pink to Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to Some Kind of Wonderful.  Can you stand that much teenage heart break and angst?  Fair warning: no crying on the dance floor!  Well, maybe just this once.

(This is neither a picture of Debbie Deb nor any of our dancers…but it ain’t far off:)

DDPP had an off-the-calendar event (12/27) and I don’t know what to be gushier about – the amount of ladies that came out in an off week, that we had a CHICAGO DEN MOTHER dancing with us, or that the whole group indulged The Den Mother in my wacky playlist?!?

This playlist came together on a wing and a prayer but includes two songs that always give me a little DDPP time at home, a bunch of songs I had been collecting that, surprisingly, we never mixed before and a little shout-out to my own special day. It was an amazing kick-off to my birthday weekend!

I will leave you with this video from Blood Orange – an artist on the playlist that I am really enjoying – you should enjoy it too!

If disco had lived into the 80’s…

Wait a minute! It did!

Just not in the States. Why does the Old World get to have all of the dance fun? Well, this night (12/20) we took the disco back and free-styled it without the polyester and medallions. Thanks to Just Rob, and his ‘Italio Disco’ genius friend Karen, DDPP got to experience a night straight from an Italian dance club circa 1982.

Living on Video – Trans-X

Don’t Loose Your Heart Tonight – Joy Peters

Hypnotic Tango – My Mine
Shoot Your Shot – Divine

This music is the perfect mix of disco groove and 80’s fun, it was really familiar without being known. Gotta say it took us by surprise how much we enjoyed it! This video gives a great glimpse of the style, in all its 80’s glory:
