Gonna Make You Sweat

Remember this classic 1990 album from C+C Music factory?

Last week Friday June 21st, our dance party was the place to be.  Not only did we have a wonderfully crowded dance floor but the music was jumpin.’  Many thanks to DJ Trophy Bass for his music mix.  Check it out:

We’re still waiting for the installation of the air conditioning unit–but I know it’s coming soon.  Until the dance studio cool down, we’ll do it the way we always do it–dancing full tilt.  As C+C Music Factory says, “Everybody dance now!”

Can we get more cowbell?

Our next dance party is Friday July 5th, 8pm at Martell’s School of Dance in Highland Square.  As always, you can stay up-to-date with the dance parties and the event details in several places.  You can continue to follow this blog–but you can also social network with the group through these links:  facebook group–DDPP Akron, a facebook page Dance Dance Party Party Akron, and on twitter: @DDPP Akron.  Remember: we always dance on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Friday of every month.  We’ll see you on the dance floor!

Video Killed the Radio Star: Our 1st Veejayed Event

We didn’t just dance to “Dare” by the Gorillaz.  We danced to this animated video projected onto the wall of the dance studio.

Last Friday, June 7th, was a special night for DDPP-Akron.  It was our first ever dance video night!  Yes, that’s right–our deejay Den Mother didn’t just bring a playlist of great dance songs–she also projected the videos for these songs, floor to ceiling, stimulating us aurally and visually.

Have YOU ever danced on Soul Train?  Those of us who stepped in front of the projector last Friday got to see our silhouttes dancing with the fabulous dancers on the screen.

If you missed it, you need to picture it:  the full length and height of one wall of the dance studio (that includes the door) was covered with splendid music videos streamed off Youtube.  If you stood in the middle of the room, the projected image was doubled in the mirrors that run along the dance room wall.  So when all six members of the band L.T.D. performed live on stage during the video for “Back In Love Again,” we saw an enormous 12 piece band rockin’ that stage.  Yes, there were two J.Lo’s singing “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” and Martell’s was filled with break dancers during the song “Don’t Stop the Rock.”  As each of us danced around the room, we became a part of the light show as the projection bulb covered us, casting our silhouettes on the wall.  Members of DDPP were each shadow dancers in the music videos.  It was AMAZING!

Can you spot Jean-Claude Van Damme as a spectator in the crowd surrounding the break dancers?

I found that the distraction of the videos helped me open up and dance with even more abandon than usual.  It felt like I couldn’t dance hard enough and I even felt comfortable imitating the dance moves I was watching!  I hope we do this again–and I hope it’s really soon.  Many thanks to the Den Mother for bringing this brilliant idea and new experience to DDPP ❤  Check out her playlist of songs/videos:

Don’t miss our next dance party Friday, June 14th, 8pm at Martell’s School of Dance in Highland Square.  You never know what you might miss.  See you on the dance floor.

Disco Inferno

Last Friday, May 31st was a Fifth Friday of the month–and that means we were dancing to a movie soundtrack.  For May, we chose the 1977 disco soundtrack from the movie Saturday Night Fever for our playlist.  All the dancers got their fill of the Bee Gees, that’s for sure!  To round out the hour’s worth of music, DJ Prisoner added a few disco hits to supplement the playlist such as the warm-up song “Disco Lady,” and several songs at the end including Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff,” “Le Freak” by Chic (LOVE Nile Rodgers!!), and Heatwave’s “Boogie Nights.”  Truth be told:  DJ Prisoner also replaced the 11-minute version of The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno” on the original soundtrack with a shorter 3 1/2 minute recorded version!  Check out the entire music mix:

It was great hearing KC &the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes” again–and “A Fifth of Beethoven” was far more funky than I remember it to be.  Everyone in attendance seemed to be loving the 70s soundtrack and we plan on continuing our movie soundtrack nights for the next Fifth Friday as well–which will occur in August.

Don’t forget: our NEXT dance party is the first Friday in June–which is THIS Friday, June 7th, 8pm at Martell’s Dance School in Highland Square.  We’re featuring a music playlist courtesy of the Den Mother accompanied by music videos.  We’ve never done something like this before so we’re really excited to try something new.  Come and join the fun.  Click HERE to see the facebook event link.  See you on the dance floor!
